Categories of Membership
There are two categories of membership in the institute and are as follows:
Practitioner: An individual who has successfully completed any of the following courses and has paid the yearly subscription to FIEH through
the manner prescribed in this Constitution may be admitted to or advanced as a voting member:
- Bachelor in Applied Science (Environmental Health) in any Universities in Australia and New Zealand.
- Bachelor in Environmental Health, joint award between FSM and UWS -Hawkesbury.
- Bachelor in Environmental Health (USP/FNU)
- Diploma in Public Health for general overseas appointment (RSH) Diploma in Environmental Health
- Diploma in Environmental Health (FNU)
Life Member: A retired practitioner who has made significant contributions to the profession may be admitted to or advanced as a voting member through a motion in the Annual General Meeting.
Student Members: An individual who is enrolled as a student in a course approved by the Institute may be admitted as a student member upon application to the National Council.
The basic approved courses are:
- Bachelor in Applied Science (Environmental Health) in any Tertiary Institutions in Australia and New Zealand.
- Bachelor in Environmental Health (FNU)
- Diploma in Environmental Health (FNU)
Associate Members: Qualifying individuals not eligible for Voting or Student membership can apply for Associate Membership. Graduates of a University of acceptable standards whose employment is associated with Environmental Health may apply to be an Associate member.
The National Council may waive degree requirements if in its judgment an applicant has adequate professional experience and has attained standing in the profession.At any time an Associate member meets the criteria for Voting Member status, he or she may transfer to Member through the admission process set out in this constitution
Requirements for Membership
- A person may not be admitted to a category of Voting Member unless that person holds at the time of application a current qualification in Environmental Health or meets this requirement by equivalent means satisfactory to the National Council.
- Any qualification allowing voting membership can only be approved through the endorsement of 50% plus 1 of voting members.
- Each application for admission or advancement as a full member shall be submitted to the General Secretary on the prescribed form and be accompanied by the annual subscription or an authority to deduct subscriptions in installments to meet the annual required subscription.
Cessation of Membership
A member may be removed from membership for professional misconduct, breach of the FIEH Code of Ethics, on resignation, on death, or for non-payment of monies owing, or as a result of a professional disciplinary decision.
Discipline
- The contract of membership requires that members shall be subject to the authority of the Institute in respect of their professional conduct.
- Members shall be obliged at all times to abide by the Code of Ethics and to observe the Constitution of the Institute.
All fees and subscriptions in respect of membership or entry standards and any other payments due from members for any purpose shall be determined through the approval of 50% plus 1 of voting members.
The fee schedule shall be as follows:
- The procedure for dealing with complaints against members and the sanctions or penalties which the Institute may impose, shall be set out in a Guide for Disciplinary Action as part of this Constitution, which shall have regard to relevant principles of natural justice and human rights.
- The Guide for Disciplinary Action shall also provide for the publication of appropriate details of disciplinary proceedings.
Annual Subscriptions
Every eligible practicing member shall pay a subscription of ten dollars ($10.00) per fortnight to be directly deducted
from salary or deposited in a lump sum into FIEH’s cheque account.
Every life member shall not pay any subscription or other fees.
Every Associate member shall pay a subscription of $5 dollars ($5.00) per fortnight to be directly deducted from salary or deposited in a lump sum into FIEH’s cheque account
Every student member, on acceptance shall pay a subscription of five dollars ($5.00)/annum
Power to Waive, Reduce or Refund Fees and Subscriptions
FIEH, through the approval of 2/3 of voting members shall have the power to waive or reduce the whole or any part of any fees or subscriptions payable by a voting, student or associate member.
